nice in the shower but don't last . August 7, 2010 paul dudley I've had two of these shavers. The first needed replaceing within a year because the battery failed. The second developed an erratic habit of switching itself on and off within several months. Expensive for such a short life.
On the plus side I guess it was nice to use in the shower-which might account for my two failing early,I suspect they were not fully waterproof.
Philips nivea for men hs8040 review May 13, 2010 S. Varga (caerleon, wales) Shaving for me has traditionally been a laborious process; it often caused immense discomfort and pain due to my sensitive skin. I have always used a Gillette sensor excel to shave (barring a cheap boots own brand electric that seemed more pre-occupied with cutting my face than removing facial hair) and more often then not would be left with a sore face and several cuts.
I hated shaving, it used to be a chore and a once a week (sometimes two) thing. I decided to look around on the net to a solution to my sensitive skin/shaving problem and came across a forum that recommended this shaver. After being persuaded by a brilliant advertising campaign (a fembot shaving a man in the shower using the shaver) I decided to take the plunge and found the hs8040 for an incredible price of £40 in boots.
I rushed it home and took it out of its packaging, slicing my fingers in the process due to that stupid plastic horror packaging. The first thing that I noticed was its design, the thing looks great in the hand, with a nice futuristic contemporary design (which has been ruined by the more recent version) the devise also has great ergonomics, allowing for several holding styles and feels comfortable to hold in these positions. The shaver is totally waterproof and can be used in the shower for that "wet shave" feeling and to save time.
It also came with a pouch, a trimmer attachment, a brush and a trial size can of nivea balm. The pouch was okay though it feels a bit too small and can be awkward to close. The trimmer and brush both function as they are supposed to.
I decided to take the shaver for a test drive. I filled the cartridge with balm and jumped in the shower. I turned the shaver on and dispensed a nice amount of balm and began to shave hoping my face wouldn't be blended. The balm was soothing and had a really nice lubricating effect allowing the shaver to easily glide over the skin which when both combined minimised razor burn. I found that I needed to press the button to dispense balm 2-3 times per cheek for a smooth shave.
The end result was a really nice, close shave with minimal razor burn (there was some due to the fact that my skin needs a few weeks to adjust to this devise, it says this in the manual) the balm did its job and is worth the price.
All in all this is a fantastic devise and has converted me to electric shaving, I would really recommend this to anyone.
As for the other models in this line, I would definitely go for this one and I just cant see the point in paying an extra £50 for a hunk of plastic with the hs8060 and the 8020 takes 8 hours to charge compared to the 3 hours of this.
Philips has seemed to revamp the line with 3 "new" models that look different. They are exactly the same as these just from a different design which looks like some tacky design from the 80's. I feel that this was done to con consumers out of more money.
Thanks.
SANDY April 10, 2010 Sj Brown (scotland) a great item my husband loves it .The gel i got in argos it is not always easy to get.
Good value April 3, 2010 Steve M (UK) Been using this razor for 2 years now and still as pleased with it as I was when first purchased. It may seem a little expensive at first but for shear value for money, smooth shave and reliability it can't be beaten in my opinion.
Rotary Shaver April 1, 2010 Stan Rotting (UK) Does all it claims. As good as a wet shave or better without any soreness.
